8 x 10” b&w photograph on glossy paper, with studio stamp, ‘THIS PHOTO MAY BE PUBLISHED ONLY WHEN PROPER CREDIT IS GIVEN NICKOLAS MURAY, NEW YORK.’ Photo in very good condition, mounted on board with mat, protected with mylar. Ink gift inscription on the lower right-hand corner “Love to Shirley from her Pal.”


§ An very rare portrait of Rosa (Rolanda) Covarrubias (1895-1970) who was married to the Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias who was best friends with photographer Nickolas Muray. Rosa Covarrubias was a multidisciplinary artist and dancer, and in the intimate circle of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. She was also photographed by Man Ray in 1923. Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) was a Hungarian-American photographer, best known for his photographs of Frida Kahlo, who was also his lover. In 1931 Muray pioneered an illustration from a color photograph to be published in an American mass-publication magazine; a swimming pool advertisement in Ladies’ Home Journal. During this time he became a leader in color photography. Item #108127
