§ The brother of Edward S. Curtis, Asahel (1874-1941) became a professional photographer in 1894. His commissions took him throughout much of the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. and Canada. The work was extensively published in local and national magazines including National Geographic. Mount Tacoma is now officially called Mount Rainier, renamed by George Vancouver in honor of one of his friends. "Tacoma" is the name given to the mountain by the indigenous Salish people.
