§ A fascinating pamphlet printed just one year after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, outlining the history, geography, mineral wealth, demographic structure and future prospects for the United States’s newest acquisition. Kurutz says of Harris, "He speaks of California's geographic position, the building of the transcontinental railroad, and its future as the gateway to the Orient. It would become, he predicted, the new Constantinople, or Lisbon".
