DAB notes: "Over the years, in biting, witty editorials, Greeley crusaded against slavery, the conditions of penury, an unchecked aristocracy, suppression of women’s rights, and capital punishment while supporting peace movements, vegetarianism, labor rights, Fourierist communities, and high tariffs. He also railed against tobacco, alcoholic beverages, and marital infidelity... Greeley became famous for giving wide currency to the quotation “Go west, young man, go west,” although the statement had originally been coined by John Soule, an Indiana editor, in 1851. Greeley in fact not only promoted the western movement but urged as well that Americans be continually willing to uproot themselves to seek a better life." Item #122438
