Original green cloth (backstrip faded under the d/j) stamped with facsimile signature in gilt to upper board, backstrip with gilt lettering on black ground, and gilt decorations, in original dust-jacket which has had the lower flap trimmed very slightly. First edition, first printing, the printed portion of the dust jacket has author, title and half the text on a green band. Illustrations by Edward Shenton. Written during Hemingway’s more experimental Key West years, a work of non-fiction, “mixing humor, flashbacks, literary pontification, and self exposure with his fable on aesthetics... ” (Reynolds, Michael, ANBO).
