Corners, head, and tail of binding slightly bumped, one inch tear to p. 43-44; very good copy. Bookplate of Bill Bauer to terminal pastedown. First edition, large paper copy. BAL Binding B, with spine title measuring 4 7/8’. Written toward the end of Whitman’s life, while he was ill, “During the last two years I have sent out, in the lulls of illness and exhaustion, certain chirps—lingering-dying ones probably (undoubtedly)—which now I may as well gather and put in fair type while able to see correctly...” Whitman prefaces the work by stating it’s intention as a memorial to his time with wounded soldiers during the Civil War years.
