The Hanging of the Crane.

Small 4to., 30 leaves printed to recto only, printed in red, blue and black, 13 hand-colored plates with captioned tissue guards, including illustrated half-title. Full vellum, stamped in gilt and black, deckled edges. A very good copy with only some minor rubbing to the vellum, an ex-library copy with bookplate to first pastedown, sleeve to last endpaper, and shelf-marks to backstrip. With a poem written on the first endpaper in ink by William and Harriet Magee, to “John and Elizabeth.” This edition is limited to 1000 numbered copies, in the first 250 of which the illustrations are colored by hand, this is number 245. The Hanging of the Crane was written in 1874. This special edition commemorates the 100th anniversary of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s birth. Illustrations are by prominent artist, Arthur Ignatius Keller (1867-1924), who illustrated other popular works by authors such as Bret Harte, Washington Irving, S. Weir Mitchell, and F. Hopkins Smith. This book was once part of the Magee family library at Alder Farm, which is the present campus of the College of Holy Names. Item #106695
