David & Goliath, and The Nativity, France, ca. 1510

purchase
  23. David and Goliath, and The Nativity, France, ca. 1510 [Illuminated manuscript leaves on vellum. France (?Tours), ca. 1500–1520] The initials “P” and “D” cut from a large antiphonal. “P” is a miniature of the nativity of Christ, set inside a large stable; “D” is of David and Goliath. Framed separately. These two magnificent miniatures have been shown to be closely linked to a group of cuttings from a monumental French Renaissance choirbook attributed to the Master of Morgan 85. The artist sometimes collaborated with Jean Bourdichon, but he is closer to a follower of Bourdichon known as the Master of Petrarch’s Triumphs.   $25,000 (the pair)

Corner Painting of St. John the Baptist, France, ca. 1525

  24. Corner Painting of St. John the Baptist, France, ca. 1525 [Illuminated manuscript painting on vellum. France, probably early 16th century] Mounted in a velvet and gilt frame ca. 1900. The image appears to be John the Baptist in his camelhair shirt, arguing with Herod and Herodias against their scandalous union. Why she is shown holding a bag of money is not clear as the image thus painted is not the standard depiction of the subject.   SOLD
